On November 28th, 2011, the CUNY Board of Trustees met to cast their votes on a proposed 5-year, 24% increase in undergraduate student tuition. Thousands of students, faculty, and friends marched from Madison Square Park to Baruch College to protest what they saw as an unjust process, and an unnecessary increase in tuition.
The previous week, at the only hearing allowing public comment, violence broke out in the Baruch College lobby. When the meeting room filled up, students seeking entry were barred, and told to go to the “overflow room” where they could watch on a closed circuit TV. Many refused this option, and protested in the lobby.
